Ol’ Gummy Magoo

August 19, 2010

Well, our dear Cookie has two fewer teeth to polish. Today she had her dental cleaning with Dr. Barney in Fairfield. She came through with flying colors, although a bit groggy from the anesthesia as you can see from the snapshot above. And, we found out that, like Elaine Benes, Cookie has earned the troubling label of  “difficult” in her chart. Probably because she snapped at the technician on her last visit. Oops! Sorry! Was that bad?

I love doctor Barney. And let me tell you why:

1. He is not one to do surgery on your pet unless absolutely necessary.

2. He explains everything super clearly before he begins the procedure.

3. And he affectionately calls Cookie “Baby” while petting her head to comfort her (bedside manner goes a long way with me).

We knew that Cookie would need one rotten premolar extracted from her lower jaw, but what we didn’t know is that she was hiding another black and broken molar up high. This was also removed to avoid further infection. Aside from those two, her teeth are in pretty good shape. I will just continue our brushing as usual in addition to administering another round of antibiotics. Cookie has taken rather nicely to this daily routine and will surely not mind the poultry flavored toothpaste that the Good Doctor sent home with us.

Right now Cookie is snoozing softly on her fluffy bed in the living room and I am glad to have her back at home. She’s feeling puny, but we are taking good care of her. For the next 3 to 4 days she will be dining on brown rice, boiled chicken, mashed bananas, strawberries, nonfat plain yogurt and Wellness brand soft food and stews! Stay tuned for future health “pupdates,” and thanks for visiting!

Stay Gold, Cookie Girl!

“When I stepped out into the bright sunlight…from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home…”

As I snapped this picture of Cookie leaving the house today, this quote from “The Outsiders” ran through my mind. Every day she greets the daylight with such happiness and hope. We should all follow her “living in the moment” positive attitude! And I hope you all will send us positive vibes on Thursday for Cookie’s scheduled dental cleaning and rotten fang extraction with Dr. Barney. If her smile wasn’t so bright already, I would suggest a gold replacement toof!

Cookie’s health pupdate

April 1, 2010

Hello readers.

Dr. Barney called me yesterday with the results of Cookie’s excised little tumor. Dr. Barney said that it was a “circumscribed mammary ductal carcinoma.” The good news is that it was completely removed. The bad news is that it was not completely benign. That just means that we have to be extremely aware of recognizing any future tumors that may appear in her mammary glands (ie. we must “feel her up” once a month). The situation could have been a lot worse, so we are happy that we went ahead with surgery. The good doctor said that there is a 50% chance that we may see more of these during Cookie’s lifetime, and 50% that we won’t. Let’s hope its the latter!  An interesting thing to note is that the risk of a dog developing a mammary tumor is 0.5% if spayed before their first heat (approximately 6 months of age), 8% after their first heat, and 26% after their second heat. But, spaying does not provide a protective effect against mammary tumor development after 2 years of age. We know that Cookie was not spayed until she was about 4 years old.  So in the words of Bob Barker “….help control the pet population. Have your pet spayed or neutered. Goodbye, everybody!”

Health Pupdate

November 17, 2009

Good news. After sleeping all through the night looking like a little perfect white parenthesis in her bed (overhead view), Cookie seemed back to her wiggly self (lately she has been depressed because of her condition). Her mouth seems to have closed a little bit, and she was not as slobbery as she has been the past few days when eating.

She still can’t really drink, so Tim made her a flavorless ice slushy in the blender and she loved it! All in all, I would say that I have noticed a minor improvement, but we still have a ways to go. It’s only been 12 hours since her first prednisone treatment. We will check back with Dr. Barney this afternoon.

Please keep saying your prayers.
