Happy Anniversary!

January 20, 2009

cookie-announcement

Today is our 1 year anniversary of adopting Cookie. I remember it well, because the night before we went to pick her up, Tim and I had a “date” at the new Yoshi’s Jazz club in San Francisco. I enjoyed the show, but I just kept thinking that I wanted the night to be over because I knew we were meeting her in Sacramento the next morning and I was too excited. I don’t think I slept at all that night. Visions of sugar bunz danced in my head. We immediately sent out “adoption announcements” (pictured above) to all of our friends and family and we haven’t stopped talking about her since! Below is one from a series of shots that Tim snapped while in the offices of Blue Ravine Animal Hospital where we first met Cookie.

We were allowed to give her a bath right away. I remember that Cooks was not too jazzed about bathing that morning, which is weird, because she just loves her bi-monthly spa treatments now. Maybe she was feeling shy. She was a bit nervous to be meeting new people, as I recall. But, we had brought pieces of apple for her to snack on and that changed everything. We love Cookie more than anything in the world. Thank you, Universe, for bringing us together! Time flies when you’re having fun.

Happy New Year or Gung Hay Fat Choy!

Cookie says, “Who you callin’ fat?” Well, we know we are a little late on wishing everyone a happy new year since January is almost over, but we are just in time to spread good wishes for Chinese New Year which begins on January 26. This year it is the Year of the Ox. If you were born in the Year of the Ox, “you are very patient, but your fierce temper comes to the fore when you are crossed!” Cookie was born in the year of the Monkey! Those born in 2004, as Cookie was, are described as :

Charming, charismatic and extremely inventive. They are impatient when it comes to getting their way, but their anger cools quickly. (Cookie has been known to shun us if she does not receive her belly rubs on command!) With their considerable talent and extraordinary originality, Monkeys may enjoy luck and in whatever career they choose, but usually excel as troubleshooters, scientists, researchers or inventors.”

That makes sense. Cookie IS very well liked at work as ‘chief audible tooter’ and she’s always inventing new ways to get treats.

At my place of work, it is as common to wish your colleague “Gung hay fat choy” for the lunar new year as it is to say “Happy new year” on January 1st. Chinese New Year is a very popular celebration in the Bay Area. There are parades and festivals with great traditional foods such as dumplings and noodles. Money in red envelopes is given to children to bring a year of good luck! In fact, the Chinese believe that the color red will bring good luck. Cookie plans to wear her new Old Navy red belted trench-coat even if it is a sunny day. I will be sure to post photos.

Yes, we are looking forward to a very good year indeed: Cookie’s first anniversary with us, our wedding in April and just plain old being happy about all the great things we have in life. These photos of Cookie were shot by Tim last fall during Cookie’s apple-eating phase. Seeing her sweet smile just makes me so happy, I wanted to share it with you all.
